I Rest My Case

In the early hours of August 4, 2019, a gunman in Dayton, Ohio slaughtered nine people and injured 27 others. This came a mere 13 hours after a gunman slaughtered 22 (as of Aug 7) Hispanics in El Paso, TX.
In a press conference following the Dayton shootings, Police Chief Richard Biehl said,

…that the shooter (who had an assault-style weapon) had a total of 250 rounds of ammunition in … in a civilian environment, unregulated, is problematic,”

“problematic” is an understatement.

On February 14, 2018, a gunman opened fire with a semi-automatic rifle at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, killing seventeen students and staff members and injuring seventeen others.
In response to the shootings, then Governor of Ohio John Kasich said,

If you woke up tomorrow morning and couldn’t buy an AR-15 (assault rifle), what would you lose.

And…

“Like most rights, the Second Amendment right is not unlimited. It is not a right to keep and carry any weapon whatsoever in any manner whatsoever and for whatever purpose.”

Believe it or not, this is a quote from the majority opinion in District of Columbia v. Heller (2008) by Antonin Scalia. The court voted 5-4 to strike down a D.C.’s law which in part banned hand guns outright. I wrote about this in a previous blog entitled Antonin Scalia and the 2nd Amendment.
This is a significant statement from Scalia considering his conservative Constitutional views.

So…
We don’t need for the general population to own assault-style weapons.

I rest my case.
