The Call That Never Happened

My post of August 1, 2017 dealt with Donald Trump’s propensity to spew falsehoods via his Twitter account. What prompted that was his tweet,

Donald Trump

Only the Fake News Media and Trump enemies want me to stop using Social Media (110 million people). Only way for me to get the truth out!

I went on to list just a few of his patently false tweets along with Politifact’s False-O-Meter ratings.

After the post, I read the full transcript of Trump’s interview with The Wall Street Journal (WSJ). One item piqued my curiosity. It was concerning Trump’s appearance and speech at The Boy Scouts Of America Jamboree in West Virginia.

Trump came under intense criticism for politicizing his speech. A theme that was not the intent of the Scouts. In fact,

(CNN)An official with the Boy Scouts of America apologized to the Scouting community on Thursday for the political content of President Donald Trump’s speech at the National Scout Jamboree.

“I want to extend my sincere apologies to those in our Scouting family who were offended by the political rhetoric that was inserted into the jamboree,” said Chief Scout Executive Michael Surbaugh. “That was never our intent.”

(Politico) At one point during the interview (with WSJ), Trump seemed annoyed that one of the reporters in the room called the reaction to his July 24 Boy Scouts speech “mixed.”

“There was no mix there. That was a standing ovation from the time I walked out to the time I left, and for five minutes after I had already gone. There was no mix,” Trump said.

He added: “And I got a call from the head of the Boy Scouts saying it was the greatest speech that was ever made to them, and they were very thankful. So there was — there was no mix.” (My emphasis)

About the call that Trump claimed he got from The Boy Scouts:

(CNN)An official with the Scouts said on Wednesday they were not aware of any phone calls between the group’s leadership and the President.
And they said their statement last week apologizing for the political tone of Trump’s remarks still stood.
On this call, (that Trump claims to have received) the White House did not comment.
I watched highlights of Trump’s boy scout speech and found this part particularly offensive,
“Who the hell wants to talk about politics when I’m in front of the boy scouts.”
Offensive for two reasons:
  1. His use of the word “hell” in front of an audience made up of 14 to 18 year old boys.
  2. He went back on his word and talked about politics.
